No-Touch , Hard Drive imaging (Complete Back-UP)

I just wanted to make this short post,

The server I built that is now the primary activant sco unix server...

well because its modern hardware it supports booting from usb, and because i am also
the master of Apple OSX, this computer will boot osx right from a USB 2.0 external
harddrive.

so do a powerdwn-
then plug in your Trusty External Hard Drive, Tap F-12  for boot menu, boot OSX, then
Feel free to DD your SCO Drive with out even removing it from the machine!
then just shut down the computer and disconnect the USB External, Flip Back on and
server comes back up, only now, you have a Bit by Bit flawless image of the hard drive.
and while you are at it, Compress the image, it will go from 40 gigs to just 1.5 gigs compressed!

This idea was not all my own, the owner sat down and we came up with it,  Sometimes its
good to have a time out and toss your ideas out there!

Your End of DAY Queue

This Queue was constructed by a devoted hard-core Level2 support dude :)

it took the guy over 2 hours to set up, the previous computer guy before me
had a really back asswards EOD Queue configured, he had some of the same things running 3 times from 3 different queue's... every night, just total stupidity, or a total case of the IDGAF syndrome!

before our boot log was close to 3 pages long
now it all prints up on one nice neat page, and everything listed in the log makes total sense, unlike the total mess of confusion before.

i have to give credit where its due. My Hats off to level 2 Support,

nightly backup

1.
Tape Backup

2.
Reports run / finish / print/spool

3.
system reboots

The same process every night!

incase you didnt already know, if the listener for report printing is not working properly
your reports will sit in the QUE, and not finish,

Listener does crash! keep a eye on it, we have a windows server that runs it,
the App is not the most stable thing!

The Only Unique hardware -

The only some-what unique hardware in these servers, everything else is just normal desktop/workstation class hardware, (non server)

No ECC, no XEON, No SCSI boot drive or Raid, Nothing FANCY!

e3H Nic 3COM 3C590CX-TXM
Tandberg SLR7 20/40 GB SCSI Tape Back-UP

SCSI Adaptec 29160, 32bit / 64bit PCI SCSI Card
Yes they inserted this card into a standard 32-bit pci slot with
half of the card hanging out, exposed.

RS 232 Serial Card for Legacy Terminals
Stallion Technology's EasyIO 4 Port
Totally Not Needed, But if you have legacy terminals,
Then yes.

i guess when you buy these servers its all about the software, because the hardware is totally nothing special or something that would warrant spending 10k 20k 30k 40k on a " SERVER "

From a hardware perspective this is a normal desktop / workstation with a few cards added.

Making a clone of your Activant SCO Unix Server

A intel main board with PCI slots would be nice.
945G or higher north bridge, just stay with in the socket 775 realm.

The SCO Unix kernel is multi cpu ready, the activant
applications are not threaded all that well. so you are not going
to get much of a benefit with more then 2 core's

The most important items are:
EIDE Hard drive - you can still buy these new
Intel or 3COM 3C905CX  10/100 network card's / No Support for gigabit!
Intel CPU Core2duo or the e3300, the e3300 is very strong chip for low money! $39
hopefully you choose one faster then what you already using.

more e3300 info, running this older software, it would vastly benefit from
a fast CPU clock, this cpu will run at 3.3ghz to 3.6ghz all day long rock solid stable,
just get some better cooling on this bad boy.

Ram, anything more then 1 gig will be kind of over kill,
however, Dual Channel DDR2 ram would add some extra speed for sure!

Adaptec SCSI card 29160, this is like the only SCSI card that works with SCO 5.05
so if you want your tape back up drive to work make sure you hit ebay and buy one,
also get your self a replacement tape drive as well. Also, the os will boot and function fine
with out this card in, just keep in mind, your backup's are not going to be written to tape.

Cards in the server that you might not need or even use,

EASY IO card, you may or may not be using this,
if you don't have this card installed, the os will still work and
boot just fine!

MODEM / Fax PCI card, - again the os will boot fine and function with out this card in there.

Don't build some big huge 1366 i7 monstrosity, to run your 1999 SCO Unix, you will feel
silly when it doesn't work at all, this stuff is just too new and will cause the os to kernel panic.
Unless you are going to virtualize :)

As a good resource you can always spend a couple minutes and browse through
the narrow band of drivers available that SCO has on their ftp site.
ftp://ftp.sco.com/pub/openserver5/drivers/OSR505

read some of the TEXTS, keep in mind this is a server os :-), or should i say that i have to keep
this in mind, :-D

Every Network Access Function

I had to copy and paste these in by hand, i know of no other way to do this.
Sometimes you just need to log in and do little things like change the printer ip address(MPS)

or look and see the status of any reports that are running RABO, Or if you type in OSPREY and the
password, you can type in NTA,

To see your Network Terminal Assignment.

Virtual Box - SCO Unix Virtual Machine

Virtual Box is a Virtualizer, it allows you to run/boot all kinds of other
operating system on top of the OS you are running natively.

You can get virtual box free from here.

It just so happens that VirtualBox will boot your already DD'd image. Just rename the image to unix.hdd, what matters is the .hdd extension that way Virtual box knows to boot right from it as it would a real hard drive.

It boots the SCO Unix v. 5.05 just fine, the only issue I am having with it so far is the Intel Gigabit ethernet virtual adaptors they offer, do not work so well with SCO.

There is a intel desktop adaptor and 2 server adaptors. The Intel desktop one is the one that works somewhat, it's like it has lots of trouble, the ping times will stay mostly normal, as long as you are not asking anything from it, as soon

as you try to run pos or eagle browser or even network access it starts to drop data, any of those applications do eventually open, it just takes a minute.

So if you have any input as to why its doing this let me know,
feel free to comment on this blog! Any information would be a huge help and i would highly appreciate it. You help me and i will help you.
As you can see the virtual machine settings are pretty much basic,
SCO does not seem to be too picky.

So if we could just concentrate on getting a 10/100 3COM or INTEL Virtual Ethernet Driver added to VirtualBox we would be in business!
I already left a message on the forum with little to no
response,i guess that is what you get for using free software!
Also as a side note, with Virtual Box you don't even need a cpu that supports +VT, you don't even need a dual or quad core, although all that helps a lot with performance, the virtual machine will still run! Virtual Box will run the SCO Unix VM with just a (single core) Intel Celeron 900 cpu in my new 279 dollar laptop from micro center.

Activant Pushes the new Linux server

Before you go and toss out your trusty SCO UNIX SERVER, and spend 10k, 15k, 40k+ on a new server that you probably don't need...

think about how well your current system is working, and even if it may be a little slow, is it really worth spending X amount to speed it up, in all seriousness that is all you are doing. all applications, everything installed to the windows clients stays exactly the same, Linux or SCO.

BTW, there are many ways you can speed up your network other then replacing your server,
the Clients them selves, it costs about 200 to build a e3300 celeron computer with 2 gb ram, build up some computers install win xp, you WILL Notice massive speed increase.

upgrade your Hub to a Switch, upgrade your 10/100 Switch to a 1000, even though the NIC in the server is only 10/100 you are still massively increasing your network bandwith!

You can also replace your harddrive in your sco server! that will speed it up tons!
i have a guide on this blog that goes over how you would do that.

Here is the deal:
(From what i have found) genuine limitations with current SCO servers:
-You are limited to IDE when it comes to main boot drive
SATA is not supported
-You are limited to PCI 10/100 NIC, and pretty much only a INTEL or 3COM one at that
- The File system is not journalated, so this means power failures are much more painful with the sco system
- there is a SCSI Adaptec 29160 card in there, have not tried to boot from it, might work?

if you can deal with these limitations, witch i am , i am sure you can too!
unless you like spending money... :)

Then just make sure you keep your system powered up, running smoothly, HOOKED to a APC 1000 watt+ or something alike!

Never do a hard boot, always do a " powerdwn " from the login window if you must take the server down for any reason at all!

every time you do a hardboot, you have about a 20% chance it will not come back up!
if you do a hardboot while its trying to fix the file system(from a previous hardboot), then you have a 75% chance its not going to come back up at all...

yes it is that fragile , don't say i didn't warn you!

Change the Harddrive in the Activant SCO UNIX Server 5.05

This is what i did to change the hard drive in the 2003 7 year old activant eagle server with out any help from them.

-Type "SHUTDOWN"
-Run all end-of-day, Back Up to tape if you have one
-type QUIT
-type "powerdwn"
-Do you wish to power down y/n
-type Y

open the case, clean it while you are in there!
pull the, in our case 40 gig eide western digital

brought it over to the mac, used a USB 2 IDE adaptor,

Image the
drive...

open terminal in mac
- type
- diskutil list
- now you see the 40 gb drive, /dev/disk0 or something like that
- type: sudo su
- dd bs=1m if=/dev/disk0 of=unix.image
- this will take some time you can follow the status of this by typing in ls -l
it will show you the size of unix.image, when it gets to 40 gb wala!

- now, unmount the 40 gig drive
- connect the new IDE drive, in my case it was a western digital blue 320gig 32mb cache
- diskutil list - just to make sure the device has not changed numbers
- dd bs=1m if=unix.image of=/dev/disk0
- you can now open up activity monitor, and click on disk activity and when it counts up to 40gig written +/- it will be complete.

this will write boot loader, Partition Table, File system everything,
here is the only limitation, that new 320 gig hard drive is now just a 40
gig, but a brand new much faster one and ready to run for years to come! hopefully!

Activant & Hardware and Software $upport

You can at any time cancel activant's support for your hardware and software!
you can continue to use the system no problem, just you cant call them for anything period.
you will not receive any more worthless upgrades and you will no longer receive a grab your ankles and take it bill every month. just use what you paid for, and try to take care of what you are already using.

keep in mind if you have to break down and call them for support they are going to get you good. So try to not put your self in a situation where your hard drive dies and all hell breaks loose, be preemptive and it will save you thousands and thousands of dollars every year!
-
Or you can email me, and i will try to help you the best i can, i would be cheaper then they are that is for sure!
